Definition

What is a banking API?

A banking API is the bridge between your application and the customer's money. Technically, it is a REST API that abstracts each bank's protocol, certificate exchange and authentication into one consistent service contract, so your code reads an account or starts a payment without a direct bank integration.

viaBanking ships an open banking API extended with providers, EMIs and regional rails. Get keys, write code, and start moving funds. See industry maps on the solutions overview.

The problem

Integration fatigue across fragmented bank APIs

Every bank publishes its own open API. Most are technically compliant and operationally different, and the cost lands on engineers and roadmap. These are the challenges teams face without viaBanking, and the exact problems our service is built to solve:

  • Provider fragmentation

Bank APIs differ: one bank returns balances flat, the next nests them. Consent windows also vary.

  • Inconsistent bank APIs

Status codes, retry rules and error shapes of bank APIs shift on every update.

  • Compliance overhead

EMIs, regional providers and licence renewals stack up. A single digital application wires twenty open APIs to start in three markets.

  • Maintenance cost

The bill scales with every bank, account or country you open next.

The viaBanking solution

One API banking layer for every bank you need

viaBanking is the universal API banking aggregator. We connect to providers, banks and EMIs, normalise the data and payment models, and expose one open API your team writes code against. Routing partners keep every bank live.

The result enables one auth flow, one schema, one upgrade path. Finance gets clean reconciliation across every bank account on one open banking service.

Core capabilities

Everything the API exposes, out of the box

  • AIS

    Account data

List linked bank accounts, fetch balances, pull transactions, refresh on demand.

  • PIS

    Payment initiation

Start single, bulk and recurring payments from any consented bank account.

  • KYC

    Account verification

Confirm account ownership, IBAN, name match and real settlement before you ship value.

  • DATA

    Transaction retrieval

Backfill statement history within bank-permitted windows.

  • FSM

    Status handling

A unified state machine across every bank: Pending, Authorised, Settled, Failed.

  • EVT

    Webhooks

Get a signed callback when consent, payment or account state changes.

  • SBX

    Sandbox & testing

A free, no-card sandbox enables full coverage of every bank and every flow before you go live, so your code is production-ready.

  • DOCS

    API documentation

Use cases

What the API banking layer enables

Five practical scenarios our customers ship on one open banking endpoint, with AIS and PIS APIs enabled by default.

  1. 01

    Onboarding

Open an account, pull KYC-grade financial data and approve the user in minutes.

  2. 02

    Lending & risk checks

Read 12 months of bank transactions to underwrite cash-flow lending on real financial data.

  3. 03

    Merchant payments

Start bank-to-bank payments at checkout. Settle directly to the merchant's C2B account, enabled by PIS APIs. Skip card fees.

  4. 04

    Reconciliation

Match incoming funds to invoices across every linked bank account, on one open feed.

  5. 05

    Regional expansion

Open a country by toggling banks, not rebuilding. See coverage on the pricing page.

Integration flow

From API access request to production monitoring

  1. 01

    Request API access

Sign the developer terms and get sandbox keys the same day.

  2. 02

    Consent & authentication

Your application redirects the user to their bank; the bank issues a consent token; viaBanking hands your code a session.

  3. 03

    Data or payment request

Call /accounts, /transactions or /payments. One endpoint shape across every bank in the open network.

  4. 04

    Response handling

Use the unified status model, listen for webhooks and render the result.

  5. 05

    Production monitoring

Promote your code, point at live banks and watch every flow. Runbooks in the developer docs.

Security & compliance

Explicit consent. SCA on the bank. Minimal data.

Every consent is explicit and revocable. Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) runs on the bank's side; viaBanking never sees credentials. Data minimisation enables digital banking applications to store only the fields each scope needs.

The platform operates within the PSD2 framework and tracks emerging PSD3 guidance. Licence and authorisation details vary by market; review the current scope on our about page before going live.

  • Consent capture, audit-logged on every bank
  • SCA orchestration: credentials stay with the bank
  • Data minimisation per scope, per banking application
  • Encryption in transit and at rest across the open banking service

FAQ

Common questions before you start

How long does a banking API integration take?

Most teams make their first sandbox call in under a day and start in production in two to four weeks.

Which banks and accounts are covered?

Over 2,500 EU bank connections plus major EMIs, with AIS and PIS APIs available on the same open endpoint.

Does the API cover both data and payments?

Yes. One contract serves AIS and PIS APIs, so your application does not need a second integration to start moving money.

Who handles consent and SCA?

The bank does. viaBanking orchestrates the redirect, captures the consent reference and surfaces clean status to your code.

When can my financial application get to production?

Finish testing in sandbox, request production keys and enable the banks you need.

Is the API banking layer suitable for enterprises?

Yes. Enterprise teams use the same core API with dedicated SLAs and routing controls across every bank, system and account they need.
